We experience the home not only as a comfortable retreat but as a place to enjoy ourselves and meet safely with friends and family, in person or remotely. Our domestic space is an extension of our mind, and surrounding ourselves with objects that have meaning and value is relevant, especially in uncertain times like these. It was the stimulus that my uncle Salvatore had, even before the pandemic, when he decided to focus his creativity on making original Mediterranean-style home decorations. Working at his stand in tourist seaside areas, he listened to those customers who asked him for something more than the classic souvenir they found in all the shops. Something unique could remind them of the nature they had touched during their holidays and the contact with the island they had managed to establish. That’s why the collection of hand-painted animals was born. To evoke and remember in time the colours and smells of nature and Sicily. Each fish, gecko, or butterfly that my uncle works on is an individual creation. Read on to discover some of his treasures!

Soffici e leggere, le collane di stoffa sono alla moda. Ma non quella moda che consuma. Sono accessori sostenibili scelti da donne consapevoli e attente all’ambiente, che pensano al futuro delle loro ragazze e ragazzi. Questi gioielli sono green in quanto i materiali provengono da scarti tessili, detti cimose. Ecco spiegati i piccoli fori che a volte sono presenti su alcuni di essi!
Ho iniziato ad intrecciare collane quasi 10 anni fa, quando questi gomitoli non si trovavano facilmente. Oggi invece sono disponibili in grosse quantità, tant’é che mi chiedo se siano sempre di recupero…Il mio fornitore di fiducia é una ditta familiare che si occupa di raccogliere personalmente gli scarti e ritagli nella propria zona di appartenenza, occupandosi anche della creazione dei gomitoli. Esistono poi moltissimi tutorial per creare delle fettucce (queste strisce sono chiamate anche così) su Pinterest e Youtube, dove viene spiegato come tagliare in un certo modo le vecchie magliette per ottenere dei fili molto lunghi.
Qui ti propongo alcuni modelli facili ma di effetto. I gioieli che creo sono per quella donna che vuole sentirsi a suo agio, indossando capi e accessori comodi ma diversi dalle solite cose. Queste collane si possono anche attorcigliare o spostare su un lato per mostrare la cucitura o il bottone. Non sono solo delle collane ma anche sciarpe estive o scaldacollo. Indossandole ci si sente di buon umore, perché sono avvolgenti, con colori vivaci oppure rilassanti. Li ho pensati per le donne che come me vestono a volte di un solo colore, spesso neutro. Indossando questo accessorio sento di esprimere parte della mia personalità. D’altronde il nostro abbigliamento e postura fanno trapelare qualcosa di noi, del nostro carattere… é un linguaggio di comunicazione non verbale.
Per fare questo girocollo ho alternato trecce monocolore rosa confetto e rosa ortensia a trecce con i due colori mischiati. Li ho poi cuciti insieme e inserito le chiusure in metallo senza nichel. Non uso colla per aderire, ma annodo un laccetto cerato fra la stoffa e la chiusura.
Questa collana corta ha 4 fili di stoffa annodati e cuciti alle estremità. E’ un modello semplice ma non velocissimo. Ci impiego circa 2 ore per realizzarlo. E’ il più popolare nel mio negozio su Etsy, per il quale ho ricevuto molte recensioni a 5 stelle.
Quest’altro modello, caratterizzato dal tessuto a stampa bianco e rosso chiaro a quadretti, l’ho lavorato con l’uncinetto facendo delle catenelle senza raddrizzarle. Ho ottenuto così una forma a spirale che ha un maggiore volume e meno senso di pesantezza della collana. Di lunghezza media, si adatta benissimo in primavera ed estate su abiti scollati.
In questo completo ho usato il lucet, ovvero una sorta di forchetta di legno che serve per fare una treccia un po diversa. Si puó anche intrecciare con le dita, ma per questioni di praticità e per non tenere nella mano troppo a lungo il tessuto, preferisco usare il lucet. Dopo aver intrecciato tre fili di questo bel verde smeraldo, li ho uniti in una treccia e decorati con due grosse perline di legno dove é stampata una rosa (recuperate da una collana acquistata al mercatino delle pulci di Malta). Per non farla troppo corta ho preferito aggiungere un po di catenella dorata. Il suo braccialetto invece si chiude con asola e bottone.
Questa sciarpa ad anello vede invece alternarsi fili di cotone elasticizzato nero, bianco e grigio. Per questo modello super facile ci vuole un piano di lavoro piuttosto grande, perché i fili sono tagliati in lunghezze diverse, poi cuciti alle estremità e rivestiti con altro filo. Se la desideri più accollata potresti farla un po più lunga per girarla attorno al collo, come nella foto successiva.
Anche in questa collana sciarpa ho cucito insieme strisce di due tipi di scarti tessili, uno a righe bianche e arancio in maglina di cotone, l’altro in arancio bruciato in microfibra. Tessuto leggero e molto elastico. Preferisco un modello lungo da girare due volte che uno stretto da infilare con forza su e giù per la testa, rischiando di scompigliare e tirarmi i capelli.
Questo girocollo é lo stesso della seconda foto, ovvero ha 4 fili di fettuccia di cotone poco elastica annodata. Per fare questi girocolli statement uso dei fili molto grossi e giro i nodi senza stringerli uno dopo l’altro, senza lasciare spazio fra loro. Da una parte con un filo poco più lungo ho creato un asola, dall’altro ho cucito un bottone.
La moda deve essere sostenibile. In questo ultimo anno abbiamo cambiato atteggiamento su ció che acquistiamo, come lo scegliamo e di chi ci fidiamo. Ma stiamo anche imparando a fare le cose da noi. Scegliere di usare i materiali tessili il più possile per non generare immondizia e anidride carbonica o acquistare solo le cose necessarie che realmente usiamo, sono azioni davvero importanti che servono all’ambiente.

The synergy between wood and textiles comes from our family. My mum and my grandma have been tailors for all their life, so I have always been surrounded by fabrics and creativity.
